Moving into your college apartment or dorm room is one of the most exciting — and chaotic — experiences of your academic career. With good preparation, it can also be smooth and low-stress. This guide covers everything you need to plan ahead, pack smart, and get settled quickly.
Before Moving Day: Key Preparation Steps
- Confirm your move-in date and time — Many buildings have specific move-in windows. Confirm yours weeks in advance and plan your travel accordingly.
- Schedule the elevator — In multi-story buildings, reserve elevator time if the building offers this (many do for move-in day).
- Arrange help — Even a small apartment requires many hands for a smooth move. Line up friends or family at least two weeks ahead.
- Set up utilities before you arrive — If utilities aren't included, arrange electricity, internet, and gas accounts to start on your move-in date.
- Do a pre-move walkthrough — If possible, walk through the unit before moving your belongings in to note any existing damage in writing.
- Forward your mail — Update your address with USPS, your bank, school, and any subscriptions before moving.

Move-In Day Tips

- Label boxes clearly by room — it saves enormous time unpacking
- Take photos of the unit's condition before bringing in a single item — critical for protecting your security deposit
- Set up your bed first — you'll thank yourself at the end of an exhausting day
- Meet your neighbors on day one — these relationships often become lasting
